Not Yours To Break

Not Yours To Break
By: Monika Satvājyet Sunuwar

I crawled back from the misery
That you handed me.
I rose from the ashes
With a halo heart
No pain, no feelings, just void.

You mistook my gratitude
For weakness,
My kindness— A ladder
To climb on and insult.

You saw my innocence
As your chance to manipulate.
But I see through your schemes,
Yet still I let myself be manipulated.

I was never your test subject,
Yet you made me one.
And I’m not yours to break.

You made me understand
And taught me something in brutal ways:
That nothing lasts forever,
But only I last forever—for myself.

Everyone is anxious out about me.
Yet, did you see me stressed?
But I’m the most stressed one.

I’m stressed enough to fade away,
Yet not a coward to end my story
And leave everything behind in silence.

I freaked out, I panicked
But you don’t see that side of me,
Because I hide it well.

I’m not a saint to forgive you,
Nor am I a devil to punish you
I’ll simply wait for karma
To boomerang back to you.

I refuse to wear any labels
Girlfriend, lover, sister-in-law,
Mother and daughter-in-law
None of it.

If you crave these labels,
You may take them
but…Don’t ask me to wear them.

Message of them Poem : “People may have hurt you, misunderstood you and tried to define you but they do not own you and they cannot break you.”
